| AT THE FIDDLERS'S KNEE DICK AND LISA BARRETT This project was recorded as a documentary for the North Dakota and Montana Arts Councils. It is Dick and Lisa at their most informal. Laughing, talking and playing snippets of melodies. It also feature two young men that they have spent many hours teaching, John Lardinois and Preston Schmidt. Dick and Lisa feel it is important for music to permeate your everyday life, so when they have young fiddlers around the house, they may hum or sing the words and melodies, (not necessarily well), to these old tunes, so that the young began to understand that there once was a basic melody. They often notice the deer in the headlights look that a lot of young fiddlers have when asked to play just the melody. Often youngsters learn an ornamented version of an ornamented version and don't have a clue as to the melody. They feel it is important to pass the basic melodies along, as well as more complex variations, so the fiddler has a foundation to build upon. To their surprise, this project has been very well received, and many people seem to get what it was about. |
